Audie Gentry, 30, apparently was making something to eat when the fire broke out in his kitchen about 3 a.m. Allen County Coroner Lex Carter said Gentry died of smoke inhalation. Carter said Gentry's 9-year-old nephew, Charlie Hand, awakened and tried unsuccessfully to drag his uncle from the burning house. The boy was not hurt. Gentry was a former employee of Stephenson Ham Co. in Portland, Tenn. Survivors besides his nephew include two brothers, Lyn Hand of Scottsville and William Gentry of Portland; a sister, Susan Gentry of Knoxville, Tenn.; and his grandmother, Ethel Dozier of Cotton Plant, Ark. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Goad Funeral Home, with burial in Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery.
